Dynamic Exciting Drumming & Keyboard New Version"Birdland" By Only This Jazz Duo!
My amazing musician friend Tony Castellano on keyboard and me{Ken Loomer} on drums doing our version of the great song BIRDLAND made famous by Weather Report. As you can see and hear, it`s only a jazz duo. We like to do our own version great jazz songs and make it our own. Tony playing both the melody and bass line at the same time with ease, plus doing his exciting keyboard solo is why he is one of the best musicians I have ever played with. We listen to each other to add our part of the music to make this a dynamic jazz duo. With me behind my tiger stripe Pearl Drums, I get to add my drumming to drive this new arrangement in a a Rock-Funk style. Tony has played in my Ken Loomer Big Band, Jazz Quartet, Trio and of course this jazz duo which is so much fun to do.

The Way Big Band Drumming Should Be Played Driving! Exciting! Swinging!

As the drummer and leader of my Ken Loomer Big Band, it`s so important for me to drive the music with my drumming and support my fellow excellent musicians. First you must feel this music and have a great swing ride cymbal pulse that is strong. I want my drumming to be exciting so when I get a drum solo break, I want it to be interesting and have a good flow to what I`m playing. At one point I`...
Dynamic Snare Drum Solo Chops Played On Super Rare Slingerland Super Sound King
Переглядів 3597 годин тому
Drummers must work on their rudiments and hand technique to do this type of swing snare drum solo played by so many of the old school drummers. In the style of Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Roy Burns, Sonny Payne, and Joe Morello, this style of just learning how to swing on just a snare drum for me is so much fun to do. Plus I get to play on my very rare Slingerland Super Sound King Snare Drum. Th...
The Fastest Left Hand Technique Used In This Exciting Drum Solo

Most drummers always need to work on their left hand technique. I have used my own left hand technique that works very well for me. As you can see, my left arm, wrist, or fingers are not even moving, but you see and hear the stick is moving very fast. It`s my way of doing the finger control in the most easy way possible. I have my left hand using just the first two fingers to push down so sligh...

Fast Single Stroke Finger Control New Technique Used In This Drum Solo

When I want to do a relaxed fast single stroke roll, I have my own technique of how to do it. With the left hand, I push down very slightly the first two fingers on the stick. The right hand I push up the stick with my fingers and let the stick fall and push it up again with ...

One of the best snare drums that Slingerland made for Buddy Rich was this 5.5x14 ten lug model back in 1976. This had the new 5 ply maple, poplar, maple, poplar, maple shell which was a thick shell. I think my real talent is putting together this Big Band and finding all the music I want to play with these outstanding musicians. I always learn the score first so I can tell my musicians how I want the arrangement to be played. It`s always about the music first for me. Then I use my drumming to support the musicians and make the music sound as good as possible. I don`t know many rock drummers who are leaders of their own band.

      When I grew up in the 60`s and 70`s, a lot of the Big Bands were still on the road like Count Basie, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Harry James, Stan Kenton, and Maynard Ferguson. I saw in concert all of those Big Bands. I fell in love with that Big Band music and decided to form my own Big Band. With hard work as a drummer, my dream has come true for me to be the leader of my Ken Loomer Big Band. All the talk shows back then when I grew up had these great Big Bands on their show. Buddy Rich on Johnny Carson Show all the time. When was the last time you ever saw a jazz musician or Jazz band on any of the Late Night Talk Shows today. It`s Never!! The days of the road Big Band is long gone, but I have been able to keep the sound of a great Big Band like mine here in Florida. Thanks so much for your comment Paul.

    • @KenLoomer
      @KenLoomer 5 днів тому

      Since I do mostly jazz concerts playing with my Ken Loomer Big Band and Jazz Quartet, I would never play on a electric drum set. They sound only as good as the sound system you have. For practice with headphone on, they are excellent for sure. I don`t know what kind of music you play, but it seems to work good for pop music, rock, country using an electric kit. You could use the electric kit to practice on, but when doing your gigs to use real drums.

      @@KenLoomer thanks for your entertaining reply Ken. I love playing my snare... I love it with zero dampening... to make it "sing". The tones across the snare as you'd know are many & varied. I played Roland triggers in the 90's, I was not impressed. I'm not as skilled as yourself on the snare, I try, I can do up to 5 stroke single hand bounces easily, sixes are my best as I can single handedly make them sound like double triplets... 123123 in a single bouncing stroke... I am very fond of that achievement, but it's more than the bounce for me now, I like varying the tone of the strike, from the centre of the snare where I have a lovely regular rock snare tone, to the sides which I've managed to tune with variance, so that one side of the snare sounds different to the other with different bouncing tensions... strange snare playing I suppose, I'm just having fun. I'm just worried that all that will be gone if I can't play my snare skin. No rubber can emulate that, I do use practice pads, simply they do not "sing". I've seen the most modern electric snares, they pale in my needs. The best has only two strike zones and no tuning variance. Perhaps I'd be better digging a deep hole & sound proofing it. Thanks for being so kind as to answer me, I do enjoy hearing from you very much... fortunate such a great player as yourself gives anyone the time of day, so many do not. Thanks again for your entertaining and enlightening shows. Maybe they'll make a better snare electronically one day, I'm not impressed today... your snare sounds great by the way, nice tuning. Tuning, it's a big deal that too many pass over, not to mention popular copycats that I tire of... everyone having similar snare sounds. Thanks again, my best to you & yours.

    Heck, your curtains and sofa even look vintage. I really like vintage stuff, I just bought a vintage Black Forest cuckoo clock at a thrift store marked as is for $16. They claimed it was broken, I fixed it 5 minutes (the hour hand was just loose, easy fix!). Did not have a pendulum, just picked up one on Amazon. Even came with two extra pinecone weights. Now on my wall keeping good time a cuckoo-ing away like brand new! Has a one day movement.

      That`s what made this an excellent arrangement of this famous jazz standard. People can easily hear the chord changes, along with all that`s going on in this arrangement. A very wonderful arrangement with some exciting off beat hits played very tightly by my musicians. Just the type of swinging new charts I like to play with my Big Band.

    I owned and played the same 60’s kit in the 70’s for several years but sadly didn’t keep it. Mine was in blue oyster pearl but I always wanted a mahogany finish kit so I wrapped in coloured vinyl and it looked great to me. I also drew a logo on the front head which you couldn’t distinguish from a factory applied one. Shouldn’t have sold it. But I now have a Yamaha Absolute Hybrid Maple which is really nice instead. 🤘😁🥁👍
